Face to Face: Sheer Minerals v. Leading Brands

Hello Natural Beauties,

Mineral makeup is everywhere!  Almost every leading makeup brand has a version of it. The name in and of itself makes you feel like you are doing something good and healthy for your skin. Minerals are naturally occurring, so therefore…but wait, don’t be too hasty in plucking one of those pretty packages with the wholesome looking goddess off of the shelf. If what you put on your face is important to you, and I’m guessing it is or you wouldn’t be here, then lets take a look at some of the common ingredients of some leading brands of “mineral” makeup and why you WON’T find any of these in the Sheer Minerals Makeup Collection.

Talc:  Yes, it is a mineral.  While there is concern about talc in its natural form containing asbestos, the www.cancer.org site suggests that a purified form used in consumer products does not. However, talc, used as a filler in mineral makeup, can clog pores.

Bismuth Oxychloride: Yes, pure Bismuth is a mineral and is used as a thickener and absorbing agent in some products. However, Bismuth Oxychloride is not.  Bismuth oxychloride is manufactured by combining bismuth, a by-product of lead and copper metal refining, with chloride and water. It's used in cosmetics because it has an iridescent, pearly appearance. It is desirable in cosmetics for its ability to adhere to the skin.  Bismuth oxychloride was permanently listed by the FDA as a coloring agent in 1977 and as a synthetic ingredient. Many people react to this ingredient in makeup in the way of redness, hot or itchy skin and cystic breakouts.

Carmine: NOT a mineral. To prepare carmine, insect bodies are boiled in ammonia or a sodium carbonate solution,  then filtered, and alum is added to the clear salt solution of carminic acid to create the red aluminum salt, called "carmine lake" or "crimson lake." Bugs!

I remember a time, not that long ago, when the mere mention of “all-natural products” would make me think of patchouli, tie dye, no makeup and more patchouli! While there is nothing wrong with that, we’ve sure come a long way, baby!

When Lemongrass Spa first launched Sheer Minerals, it was met with mixed reactions. The question in our minds was would it be a successful niche for the company? We began with a very basic startup (foundation, blush, eye shadow and cover up) and slow sales. During this time I was able to work in Administration as the Facility Manager plus manage the Sheer Minerals department by toggling back and forth between the two. Fast-forward to today, I am happily managing the Sheer Minerals division full time with a part-time assistant. We supply both the Colorado and Florida warehouses with an expanding line of Sheer Minerals Makeup. We've come a long way, baby! We now have everything the department store makeup counters offer, only better. From primer to finishing veil, Sheer Minerals has your beauty needs covered!

Isn’t it amazing that we can now contour, line, highlight and anti-age just like every single glamour magazine on the shelves and feel good about it? We can create a smokey eye, a neutral or bold lip, a cat eye or whatever the trending look may be with no fear of what we are putting on our faces being harmful to us. The idea of going all-natural no longer carries the same “granola” connotation as it might have in the past. Thanks to our naturally glamorous owner, Heidi Leist and her dedication to keeping her finger on the pulse of what women want, as well as the best way to make it fresh, clean and natural. Lemongrass Spa and Sheer Minerals have redefined natural products to be synonymous with trend-setting glamour.

The beauty industry runs far and wide and Sheer Minerals Makeup is making its mark. We have been featured in numerous blogs, and write-ups.  Our amazing BB crème is in the spotlight of a respected skin care magazine and we even have national beauty pageant contestants wearing our products on stage! There’s no stopping us now! Lemongrass Spa and its Sheer Minerals line is standing out in a very saturated beauty industry because we are different. We care about what goes in every product. When we see a color or look that is marching down the runways, we research ingredients and options to bring a better, healthier version of it to you and your families and friends.

I’m so proud that Lemongrass Spa and Sheer Minerals are leading the way in proving that you don’t have to be spendy to be trendy, the makeup counter can be the comfort of your own home and whatever look makes YOU feel beautiful is achievable and healthy with Sheer Minerals Makeup.

Helpful "To Do’s" Before the "I Do’s"

It is countdown to wedding season and whether you are a guest, part of the wedding party or the bride to be, everyone wants to put their best pampered foot forward before walking down the aisle. Follow these head to toe tips before the "I do’s".

*3-6 months before the event, put your best face forward:

It is best to begin this early and continue the same routine until your event so that your skin has time to adapt to the products and wont react badly to something new being put into the routine. Use all of the same skin care products and makeup you will use on the day of the event.

*2 months before the event, say yes to the tresses:

If you haven’t already, begin using Lemongrass Spa’s Botanical Shampoo and Conditioner; there may be a detox period from the chemical laden shampoos and conditioners you’ve been using, but, I assure you, a couple of weeks with SLS (sodium laureth sulfate) free shampoo and botanical conditioner, your hair will feel lush and luxurious, ready for your up-do, down do or veil.

Let's Mix It Up A Little!!!

Hello Natural Beauties!

Have you ever been reading a magazine and spotted a color of eye shadow you wish we carried? Me too! So here’s what I did…I mixed it up!

Loose minerals are so versatile!  Unlike pressed eye shadows and blushes, with loose Sheer Minerals makeup you can add a little of this to a little of that and create your own custom palette. A bronzer with foundation, an eye shadow mixed with a blush, whatever you want. One of my favorite springtime combinations is the Ballerina Pink and Gold Rush mixed together. It creates an ethereal iridescent peach. Don’t be shy about mixing minerals from different categories: veils, foundations, blushes, bronzers and eye shadows.  Sheer Minerals are all made of essentially the same ingredients.  You can even create a custom lip color by combining your Lemongrass Spa Lip Butter with any color of the Sheer Minerals Rainbow.

Don’t worry about the mess. Purchase a Minerals Mates Mixing & Application Tray and create to your heart’s content. Mineral powders blend together best when shaken, so tap or scoop a small amount into one of the reservoirs of your Minerals Mates palette, put the lid on and shake back and forth gently.  As Sheer Mineral users know, a little goes a long way, so if you are mixing up a new fabulous shade of eye shadow, a little dab will do.

Some of my favorite combinations are:

This Just "In"….Spring!

What is “in” for Spring 2015? Well, if you are walking the runways of New York or LA, it appears that bleaching your eyebrows and applying foil to your earlobes is all the rage! No, really, it is! But, for the sake of appealing to all of you natural beauties, let’s go a little more mainstream, shall we?

The fashion trends seem to be leaning towards clean, classic and feminine. Right up Lemongrass Lane! If you are spring cleaning your closet, don’t give away those 80’s and even some of those 70’s treasures. Break out those “one in every color” polo shirts, one-shouldered blouses, dresses and tank tops, khaki and olive drab pants, and even culottes, which are all cutting edge for springtime.

The shoes of the season are flat mules and gladiator sandals. Accessorize with tassel earrings, backpack purses, obi (kimono style) belts, and round, John Lennon style sunglasses. Farm-fresh Ginghams and plaids, as well as crisp whites paired with navy or black for a nautical feel, are favorites for spring. The color palette is straight from the garden: sunny yellows, mint greens and sky blues. Again, like Lemongrass, fresh, clean and natural.

Loose curls, braids, beachy waves, center parts and, once again, straight from the 80’s, crimping are the trendsetters for hair. For beachy waves, use Lemongrass Spa’s Botanical Shampoo and Conditioner, spray lightly with your favorite scent of Hydrating Spritz and scrunch with your fingers until dry. Finish with all-natural hairspray.

And finally, most importantly, makeup! The anti aging BB Crème hits the bulls-eye for what is trending for 2015. Clean and sheen is what it’s all about: sheer coverage with a little glow. Let the freckles shine through! In keeping with this fresh sun-kissed look, skip the blush and apply your illuminating Sheer Mineral’s Bronzer to the prominent portions of your face: forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. For the eyes, pastel purples are in bloom. Lightly sweep Orchid Frost or Plum eye shadow across your lid for a fresh, romantic, springtime look.
