Mompreneurs Keep It All Together

Quote from Christina Scalise, Author of Organize Your Life and More

Today’s mom-preneurs are juggling more activities, school functions, social media posts and family obligations than ever before.  With life seemingly getting busier, there is one thing that can make the difference between a calm and orderly household and a chaotic, overwhelmed one – organization. We surveyed our leaders and compiled their top tips on how to they keep it all together while running a home-based business.

#1. Scheduling Is Key

It goes without saying that implementing a calendar system is a must to keeping your business and family’s schedules organized. There are a multitude of ways to accomplish this and here are a few of our top picks.

Rachael Towne, Sr. Director and mom to three children, suggested an electronic option. “We use the Calendar app and we all have iPhones. My husband and children get my updates when I have online events or when I plan on going live (on FB.) Everything from online parties, to children’s events, to appointments go on my Apple calendar. “

Soul-Soothing Stories

Soul-Soothing Stories of Cancer Survivors is a compelling book inspired by hundreds of people we’ve met over the years who have shared their inspirational stories of faith, bravery and love. The stories lovingly shared in this book are intended to be a source of light and hope for you or someone else you care about.

For years, I received personal testimonials from customers who used our natural skincare products. They raved about how much better their skin looked and felt after applying our crèmes, balms and body butters. Word spread quickly as consultants shared these powerful testimonials at their spa parties and on social media. One day I received an email from a clever sales consultant with the suggestion that we package three items together to be able to give to cancer patients. So, in 2013 we began offering our Cancer Care Set, which was eventually renamed the Loving Care Gift Set. Organic Skin & Nail Balm in a Tube, Healing Elements and Ultra Hydrating Body Crème became the magical trio in the pink or gray organza bag. Hundreds of them were ordered that year and story after story flooded our inboxes.

In 2014, in honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I decided that our corporate office would expand this program by sending Loving Care Gift Sets, free of charge, to anyone diagnosed with any type of cancer. The only prerequisite was that the recipient be nominated for the gift set by a loved one. Eloquently written nomination letters poured in and patients with tear-filled eyes gratefully accepted the gift that had arrived on their doorstep. Each package included a card to let them know that someone special had requested it on their behalf.

We continued the initiative each year and the numbers multiplied; hundreds of our customers took the time to nominate that special someone. Whether it was for a mother with breast cancer, a daughter with melanoma, a father with prostate cancer, a son with lymphoma or husband diagnosed with a brain tumor, these complimentary gifts helped thousands of deserving people. Our Facebook feed was filled with these heartfelt stories of gratitude and our home office team rejoiced in the success of the program. “We are truly a company with a heart” our sales leaders remarked.

The stories contained in this book are from customers and consultants who have walked a cancer journey. “Because of Lemongrass Spa, I am able to share my story and help educate others every single day,” said Heather P. Miller, a Senior Director with the company. Heather is breast cancer survivor, a military wife and mom of a teenage son.

When Lemongrass Spa Products opened it’s doors no one would have predicted it would become the successful community of thousands of health minded people it is today. There was no ribbon cutting, no confetti falling from the sky or even any helium balloons when I founded the company on that July day in 2002. On a shoestring budget I made bath crystals, room spray, body polish and a handful of other products in my home and through word of mouth, sold them to neighbors at little gatherings. The Lemongrass Spa Lady became my nickname and with two babies in tow my hectic work-at-home life quickly became even busier! My goal was to book at least two events a week in order to make the car payment, cover the insurance and buy groceries while my husband, Bryan, commuted down to the city of Denver. Little did we know that this little cottage business in Bailey, Colorado would become our livelihood and our family’s venturesome future. As we reflect upon fifteen incredible years, here are some of the company’s milestones.

2002 Lemongrass Spa Products began with 24 items. Pink Grapefruit is the first scent we sold; it came in Bath Crystals, Body Polish and Hand & Body Lotion. Our slogan, “made by hand for your body” was on the front cover of the 8 page catalog, prinKaren2003Clara1.jpgted with an ink-jet printer.

2003 Heidi’s mother, Karen, relocated to Bailey and began working at Lemongrass Spa and also helped the Leist’s take care of their daughters, Emily and Clara.

2004 Bryan resigned his IT position to work full time with Heidi at Lemongrass Spa Products, becoming the company President and accounting officer.

2005 Product labels changed from being printed by hand using an ink jet printer to a professional label company.

Can A Business Mentor Really Help You Become Successful?

Back in the day, direct marketing was really what we would call a “door-to-door” salesman or saleswoman. Some of the early direct selling companies were Avon, Tupperware, Shaklee, Amway and MaryKay. Over the years this industry has become increasingly popular because of the low cost to get involved and the flexibility it offers.

According to the Direct Selling Association (DSA), in 2016 20.5 million people in the United States were involved in direct sales, and 5.3 million were building an independent business through managing customers, sales and recruits Direct selling is not a new industry, but it’s seen a resurgence over the past few years as people are looking for opportunities to earn extra income or build a business outside a typical 9-5 job. Staring a direct sales business requires minimal start up costs but commitment, time and effort to become successful, just as it would building a company from the ground up.

As a direct seller you’re an entrepreneur and your own boss. Benefits include working when, where and how to you so you can be present for your family and pursue other interests. The majority of people in direct sales work from a home office, which presents its own unique set of challenges: scheduling work versus home time and keeping your business organized without having someone help you manage your time. There is a plethora of information available in written form, online and in books, but having a dialog with someone who has had similar experiences, made mistakes and continued to be successful is invaluable. A mentor can help you develop your own business voice and direction, and everyone, from the person just starting out to the leader of a large organization, benefits from mentoring. Here are four reasons you can benefit from a mentor or a business coach.

How to Make Mom Feel Like a Million Bucks

Every woman wants to feel cherished, loved and appreciated. According to a survey done by the Daily Mail with 2,000 women in 2013, receiving a compliment from a friend or spouse was the biggest confidence booster, followed by having perfect hair and looking good in pictures.

The study revealed that having a good night's sleep, a cuddle, being told "I love you" and a smile from a stranger were also guaranteed to make a woman feel happy about herself.

It also found that four out of ten women get an immediate confidence boost if they look good in a photo. Another 40 percent say they feel great after getting a night of good sleep.

While 60 percent of women follow a strict beauty regime to ensure they leave the house feeling confident, 38 percent only need a cuddle from a child, partner, relative or friend to feel loved for the rest of the day.

Women also get an esteem boost when others ask them where they bought something they are wearing, such as a sweater or purse. Another thing women love is when they’re asked who their hairdresser is or what brand of makeup they use!

Year in Review 2016

2016 was brimming with hot new products, savvy new events, social media parties and more followers than ever. Take a road trip down memory lane as we celebrate our 2016 Year In Review!

Products

You’ll find products most admired by customers in the Top 20 Products of the Year photo, featured above. Topping the list again this year are the Healing Elements Balms, soap bars including Tea Tree, Oatmeal Milk & Honey, Lavender Goat's Milk and Frosted Cranberry; BB Crème makeup and loose mineral Foundation and Matte Black Organic Mascara; plus a variety of body care and skincare products people use everyday.

The introduction of innovative new products is one of the key elements in engaging our customers and creating excitement for our sales consultants. In the spring, we released refreshing new Strawberry Lemonade and it was a huge hit with a wide variety of people of all ages. As part of our commitment in offering safer alternatives to families we unveiled a brand-new Deodorant Spray and Paste Deodorant utilizing certified organic essential oils, baking soda and odor-fighting ingredients. New Prebiotic Hand Wash was introduced to help provide a safe solution to harsh sanitizers and dish soap at the kitchen sink.

In the fall our ‘Products with a Purpose’ initiative propelled sales upward with the popularity of Soothing and Recovery Balms. These purposeful balms infused with botanicals and essential oil blends help reduce common muscle soreness, body pain and fatigue with all-natural ingredients. For the men, we added a popular Beard Oil that doubles as a hair serum for the ladies and for nursing moms, we introduced Organic Nursing Balm for healing delicate skin. To complement the addition of a few new essential oils we added a chic new Welcome Home Diffuser for large living areas and Wall Diffuser for small spaces like hallways and restrooms. We launched a revolutionary Prebiotic 3-in-1 Wash in both Unscented or Men’s Essentials scent. This organic, GMO-free product works on a molecular level by stimulating good microorganisms on the skin and promoting collagen production. It serves as a shampoo, body wash and facial wash in the shower. An exotic new floral scent, Midnight Orchid, was introduced and quickly became a customer favorite among women. For the holiday season we introduced new Snickerdoodle products and brought back perennial picks: Candy Cane and Frosted Cranberry.

With Love From Lemongrass Spa

We salute all of you who are kicking cancer to the curb! Your bravery inspires us beyond what words can describe. This month we received the most heartwarming, awe-inspiring stories of courageous people all over the country who are undergoing a variety of treatments.

When you or someone you love is going through cancer treatment there are so many emotional and physical changes that go along with it. During the month of October we asked our sales consultants to nominate men, women and children in their communities undergoing cancer treatment who could benefit from the healing products in our Loving Care Gift Set. The set includes three of our most hydrating items: Healing Elements, Nail Balm and Ultra Hydrating Body Crème. Over 700 sets were gifted throughout the month and we thought you’d adore hearing some of their astonishing stories.

“So it seems I may have been bragging on feeling so well a little early. I've felt really tired and awful for the past two days and today my hair literally came out in handfuls! So I have an emergency appointment with Kelly and her clippers at 2:30 tomorrow! I'm not risking being patchy! I've been pretty bummed out about it all day but there's no getting around it. It's not as if I didn't know it was going to happen and besides buzz cuts are cool as someone told me today - I certainly hope so!! Anyway I'll post pictures tomorrow after I figure out what the heck to do with a bald head!

On a far more positive note I got a really nice gift set in the mail from Lemongrass Spa because it's breast cancer awareness month. Thank you Sarah B-Wellpup for thinking of me. It's really cheered me up and I'm looking forward to using it all!!”

With Love...A Survivor's Story

In honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lemongrass Spa is encouraging those bravely fighting any type of cancer to share their stories with us, and in return we will gift them one of our Loving Care Sets. Read one survivor’s inspiring journey to a fresh, clean & natural lifestyle.

HeatherMiller.jpgHello! My name is Heather Miller, Senior Director with Lemongrass Spa Products. I would like to share a little bit about my journey with Lemongrass Spa. In August of 2014, a friend of mine contacted me to share that she had just joined natural skin care company and wanted to send me a catalog and samples to try. I knew that if she loved them, they must be something special. My friend is a breast cancer survivor and meticulous about what goes on and in her body. When the products arrived, I was amazed at the purity of the ingredients used in these products. And the best part was how very well the products worked!

I too am a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2011. At the time, my husband was deployed with the Marine Corps. I underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and 33 rounds of radiation treatments at the age of 37. My breast cancer was NOT genetic, I did not carry the BRCA gene and there was no history of breast cancer in my family. My cancer was labeled “Environmental”, in fact I was part of a clinical study and parabens were found in my breast tumor. That was a huge wakeup call for me!

My family went on a mission to go clean and green with our diet, cleaning products, and with our skin care. The diet and cleaning products were pretty easy to change over. However, I would spend hours researching skin care products only to end up frustrated and angry at what I found. So many products were labeled “hypo-allergic, organic, and natural” but when I would read the ingredients list, those products still contained harsh and even toxic chemicals.

I even tried making my own lotions and skincare products at home, and failed pretty miserably. I resorted to using with coconut oil, but my body still needed something else, I just could not seem to figure out what it was. So when the Lemongrass Spa products arrived from my friend, Lenora, the timing could not have been any better. The eczema on my back went away in 3 days. My skin was finally soft, vibrant, and HAPPY. I was hooked and I decided to join this amazing company without even attending a Spa Party, I was that impressed! I wanted to share these products with my family!

Products with a Purpose

Healing Elements is our number one selling product due to its multitude of uses. We’ve now expanded our line of products with a purpose with two new items: Recovery Balm and Soothing Balm! These new balms are perfect for a massage, which has been shown to improve overall wellbeing by easing physical and mental tension. Both balms feature a blend of apricot kernel oil, olive oil and beeswax to melt into the skin.

Put a spring back in your step with Recovery Balm! Known for their relieving and comforting properties, the certified organic blend of clove, arnica, cardamom and cinnamon essential oils warm up as the balm is gently worked into skin. Target sore muscles, stiff joints and tension caused by sports injuries. Don’t let strains and sprains keep you from staying active. Studies have shown regular massage can help ease the stiffness and pain associated with arthritis.

Recovery Balm is recommended for ages 10 and up due to the small percentage of cinnamon and clove essential oils.

Soothing Balm features peppermint and menthol known for their refreshing and uplifting properties. Massage Soothing Balm onto your chest and upper extremities to quickly alleviate congested nasal passages. Sinus sufferers will find relief from utilizing this on pulse points or a tiny bit under the nose. There are people that you are friends with that want to book parties with you RIGHT NOW! Then, why are they not on your calendar? You just haven’t created a great enough need for your product, in their opinion.

Now… please don’t go and start spamming everyone on Facebook with ad after ad or desperate begging on your timeline or business page.

Instead of this unproductive vomiting of information and harassment, come from a place of service and post before and afters if that works you’re your product line, or post – “What’s your biggest “skin” challenge?” (if you sell skincare) or “What’s your biggest “meal time” challenge?” (if you sell food items or items for meal prep), “What’s your biggest challenge with accessorizing your wardrobe?” (if you sell jewelry), or “What’s your biggest “cleaning” challenge? Don’t Sweat It…We’ve Got You Covered!

I don’t know about you, but having underarm odor is one of the most embarrassing things for a girl or a guy. Having to avoid someone with bad body odor is hard to cover up. As a teenager or as an adult, this awkward situation is something that can be avoided with the right combination of products.

Did you know that sweat is actually odorless inside the body?

When perspiration is exposed to the atmosphere chemical changes happen. Bacteria on the surface processes the perspiration, causing odor. On average people have 3 to 4 million sweat glands! It’s no wonder Americans are obsessed with great smelling sprays, perfumes, deodorants and antiperspirants!

There are two sweat glands, the eccrine and apocrine. Things like exercise, stress, eating spicy food, hormones, diseases, taking strong medication, running a fever, gastro problems and prolonged infections cause these glands to work overtime to cool off our bodies.

To reduce odor, bacteria on the skin should either be eliminated or out run by good bacteria to create a friendly, less odiferous environment. Good hygiene can go a long way in reducing odor as well as avoiding caffeine, spicy foods and even red meat.

2015 Year in Review

From revealing a brand new magazine-style catalog, to launching a line of certified organic essential oils, to being named to the Top 100 Women Owned Companies for the second time, 2015 has been an incredible year for growth and opportunity. Here's our 2015 year in review.

Products

The introduction of innovative new products is one of the key elements in engaging our customers and creating excitement for our sales consultants. Sheer Minerals BB Crème (Beauty Balm) was a huge hit with our customers and consultants. This lightweight tinted moisturizer was offered in five shades to provide a ‘liquid foundation’ to those who prefer it. Inspired by the Pantone Color of the Year, Merlot Organic Crème Lipstick and Marsala Blush quickly became favorites among makeup wearers. An essential oil collection, complete with Fractionated Coconut Oil and rollerball vials for mixing blends, was introduced in the summer. Tea Tree, Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint single oils plus Immune Boost, Balancing Act and Mint Revival blends were offered to customers, in addition to many essential oil products we’ve been selling for years. We launched a revolutionary Prebiotic Facial Wash and Facial Mist at our annual convention in July. In addition to the popular Prebiotic Body Wash, this organic, GMO-free product works on a molecular level by stimulating good microorganisms on the skin and promoting collagen production. Prebiotic Foaming Liquid Soap was introduced in four varieties including Mandarin Orange, Candy Cane, Tea Tree with Citrus and Unscented.

Marketing Your Direct Selling Business with Instagram

Last year my teenage daughter asked if she could get an Instagram account. This was an eye-opening and educational experience for our family as we learned a whole new way to communicate on social media with our kids and their friends. As teens moved away from Facebook and over to Instagram in large numbers last year, parents have another social media environment to monitor, with some added benefits if you’re open minded about learning a slightly different marketing approach. Instagram isn’t just for teens. Almost 80% of Instagram users are between 13-49, and 68% of the users are female.

After sitting down with my daughter for about fifteen minutes I was educated on setting up my profile, posting pictures and getting creative with #hashtags. From a teen perspective there are cool things to post on Instagram and very uncool things and now that we were following each other the last thing I wanted to do is appear as a stalker parent.   There were some abbreviations I needed to Google in order to understand what she and her friends were talking about: #goals, ttyl, TBT, OOTD, bae, cray, LYT and WTH. Now that I had the basics down I was off and running.

Because Instagram is picture and video driven (you can’t make a post without one) the visual stimulation when you scroll through the feed can become rather addictive. I found myself following gluten-free chefs, beach yoga instructors, natural skincare crafters, coffee drinkers, motivational speakers and crossfit athletes. Because IG sorts photos by hashtags, when you go to explore new people you’ll immediately gravitate toward people with common interests.

Creating Connections

Posting comments on Instagram is much like Facebook and you can easily engage with new people simply but making a positive comment on their photo. You can private message your friend on Instagram, too, which also requires attaching a photo to the initial message. Another way to engage with your friends is to add their IG name, for example @abc123, as a comment to a post, or tag them in a post. The next time your friend goes to their Instagram account they will see the post you intended for them to see. It goes without saying, if someone follows you, follow them back, unless of course you have reasons not to. Since about 70% of Instagram users check their feed at least once a day, post pictures regularly to keep followers engaged and interested. Follow and engage with people who have similar interests as you. For example, if you see a user who often posts about a healthy lifestyle and natural skin care, you may want to follow them.
