How Many Chemicals Are You Wearing?

When I first started Lemongrass Spa in Colorado sixteen years ago, I met Susan Roll, who was in the process of finalizing the SkinDeep Database on the Environmental Working Group’s website. She was so passionate and educated about the toxic load that personal care products had in the marketplace that she made it her life’s goal to educate and insist upon safer products.  It was her mission to demand that skincare companies fully disclose their ingredients in products. Since the FDA does not regulate skincare and makeup, no one was watching what large cosmetics companies were hiding in their products. Come to find out, many of those companies were not concerned about the toxicity of their ingredients and many of those so-called ‘safe’ ingredients were in fact being absorbed into skin and wreaking havoc on the health of Americans.

Once SkinDeep and other organizations began testing and reporting toxic ingredients, consumers have demanded healthier options. This consumer demand has shifted the way brands are formulating and it’s been an incredible movement to watch over the last decade.

With the data published by the EWG, the Cosmetics Ingredient Review, the Breast Cancer Prevention Partners and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, we put together a handy guide the illustrates some of the toxic ingredients that might be lurking in your personal care products and cosmetics.

Skin Rejuvenation is Just a Scrub Away

Wouldn’t it be nice if Mother Nature allowed us to just shed our skin every season? Well the good news is we can! Our skin goes through natural seasonal changes, with dry skin being a common battle in winter and summer months. Drinking water is one way to keep our skin hydrated, but it is also important to exfoliate. This helps to nourish the skin and create cellular turnover, which rejuvenates the skin. With as little time as it takes to blow dry your hair, you can get your skin in perfect shape for any season with exfoliation!

The perfect product for exfoliating skin is body polish. Applying a polish to your body is like using a natural loofa. The exfoliating action comes from sugar or salt blended with natural oils.

LaVMintBlog.jpgLavender Mint Body Polish is the perfect blend of essential oils, natural oils and sea salt that gently exfoliate and heal dry skin. Espresso Body Scrub contains sugar, organic coffee grounds and shea butter, plus it’s packed with antioxidants that improve circulation and increase detoxification. Lime Splash Body Polish gently exfoliates with sugar and hydrates skin with mango butter and avocado oil all while pampering your senses with the zesty lime and orange essential oils.

You want to apply your exfoliating treatments on clean dry skin working it into congested areas, like the thighs and upper arms, using gentle, circular motions. Don’t forget drier areas, like elbows, knees and feet. Gently remove scrub with a clean damp cloth and pat dry. Any oils left behind will keep skin hydrated so no need to thoroughly rinse or remove product. Apply moisturizer after to seal in the natural oils and enhance hydration.

scrubblog.jpgFor the skin on your face, choose a gentler exfoliator; salt and sugar could be too aggressive for delicate skin. Opt instead for Hydrating Facial Polish or Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish with smooth jojoba beads and anti-aging ingredients to revive dull skin, improve elasticity and boost luminosity.

Spring Clean Your Skincare Routine

Regardless of your skin type, the transition from winter to spring is important to understand as temperatures warm up and your exposure to sun increases. To look your best this season, you’ll also want to make some adjustments in how you treat your skin. Here are our top 4 suggestions!

Tone and Hydrate

To give skin the adequate moisturizer it deserves, preparing your skin to draw in the benefits of your skincare products is key. After cleansing, be sure to balance the pH levels adequately with a hydrating toner. In the summer using aloe-infused skincare is very helpful after exposure to the sun. Rose Water Facial Mist combines cooling aloe with refreshing coconut water to hydrate and soften. If you’re prone to redness or sunburn, your first line of defense is to apply the Prebiotic Facial Mist to restore skin’s good bacteria so that it will heal itself quickly and regenerate new skin cells. Used twice daily, the Rose Water Mist or Prebiotic will cool you down and quench dryness.

Soak up a Serum

Modify your routine with a serum filled with antioxidants to keep your skin bright and smooth. Look for ingredients like Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and peptides because they are active worker-bees for the skin.

Finding Your Perfect Match

We’re talking makeup matching, not dating, ladies! Choosing the correct makeup foundation or lipstick can be a little overwhelming when there are multitudes of options. Do you know if you are warm, cool or neutral? Don’t panic …  most people don’t know! Selecting the correct color of makeup and clothing can help you put your best and most vibrant face forward.

Choosing the wrong undertone for foundation can make your face look ashy or yellow rather than healthy and glowing. If you have pink (cool) undertones and you mistakenly choose a foundation with yellow (warm) undertones; being opposites on the color wheel, you aren’t going to be bringing out and enhancing the natural glow of your skin. Foundations are designed to blend with and smooth the color and appearance of your own skin.  If you look in the mirror and something doesn’t look quite right and you don’t have the healthy, vibrant look after applying your foundation, you may have chosen the wrong undertone.

To determine if you are warm cool or neutral, we need to first differentiate between “tone” and “undertone”.  The tone of your skin can change depending on the time of year it is. You may be a light in the winter and a tan in the summer.  The undertone, however, is the color under the surface of the skin.  Think of it as backlighting behind the skin.  I may be a medium, but am I a Sand Medium (cool) or a Golden Medium (warm)? This all depends on the undertone. Surprisingly, the color of your eyes and hair are not necessarily determining factors in your undertone.

The 3 undertones are:

Cool:  pink, red or blue undertones

Shape Up Your Skin in the New Year

The New Year is here, which mean it’s time to make those resolutions! While many of us will be focusing on a new diet or workout regimen to get our bodies healthy, it’s also important to make sure your skin is in shape. Following a weekly facial skincare ‘workout routine’ can help refresh and recharge, keeping your skin looking and feeling it’s best. To help you out, we’ve developed a no-fuss 15-minute routine for you to follow!

Step 1

Start your skincare workout by cleansing thoroughly with a healthy dose of prebiotics in our Prebiotic Facial Wash.

Why it works: Prebiotics work by feeding the skin with healthy bacteria, which encourages regeneration of skin. Washing your face daily will remove impurities that have built up as a result of pollutants, bacteria and sebum.

How to use it: Cleanse skin morning and night by applying a dime sized amount of wash to wet skin, massage gently creating a light lather, and rinse well.

Gaining Independence as a Direct Seller

When people realize there are genuine income possibilities for consultants, it allows them to dream about what lies ahead. Once they begin earning commissions and bonuses, it opens avenues in their lives they never dreamed possible. One of the most integral benefits to direct sales is the independence it offers the consultant in creating a schedule that merges with other priorities. We asked the consultants who are featured in our Fall & Winter catalog to weigh in on the topic of independence and their share their advice on gaining that freedom.

Heather Stapleton, Sr. Executive Director from Florida said “working from home has given me the flexibility to support my husband while he serves our country as a Navy doctor. His schedule is not his own and as a Navy doctor he has a very busy one. If I had a “9 to 5” job we would have to hire someone to take the kids to practice and run errands. Earning a full-time income while working from home part-time was a goal of ours and we are so blessed to have Lemongrass Spa Products as the vehicle that is allowing us to do fulfill this dream.”

Heather has been successful in earning incentive trip contests, being among the top teambuilders and part of the Advisory Board. “My #1 tip is to partner with your leader or a leader in your upline. Reach out for help and guidance. Model what other successful consultants are doing. Don’t copy it, but make it your own and run with it!”

Alexandra Meister, a Director in Indiana, joined Lemongrass Spa as a college student and achieved the title of Director very quickly. She says “working from home with Lemongrass Spa has given me financial freedom and flexibility I never thought would be mine to live out. In college, I worked my business around assignments and finals, having the peace of mind that I was the master of my schedule. After getting married and moving cross-country, I am not jobless because I now have the opportunity to grow my business in a new area. Having Lemongrass Spa as my primary source of income takes the stress out of job performance, because I answer to myself! I am able to use my love for marketing and social media on a daily basis, not just for fun, but also to increase my paycheck. For me, direct sales is the result of a passion and entrepreneurship coming together! Beyond the financial freedom and creative outlet, what surprised me the most about Lemongrass Spa is the opportunities I have had to travel to leadership and conference and meet like-minded women. Women across the country that share the same passion for healthy living and financial freedom that I wouldn't have met any other way! They have become my closest friends as we cheer each other on towards our goals and dreams. I never thought I would be working for myself at age 23, but here I am...and I sure am loving it!”

The advice Alexandra offers other women entrepreneurs is captivating. “If you are already on the path of gaining financial independence as a direct seller, keep taking those steps forward! When you integrate direct sales into your life, you are ushering in a community of fiercely passionate women and men who will inspire you daily towards your personal goals. Take advantage of this community; build others up with what you have learned and see how it grow you in return. I can confidently say that my only regret in direct sales is that I didn't join sooner!”

4 Easy Ways to Go Green This Holiday Season

Loving family gatherings and joyful gift giving are two reasons this is the most wonderful time of the year. For the environment, however, Thanksgiving through New Year’s isn’t as merry. Stores are flooded with cheap disposable toys, decorations and extra holiday embellishments often made with questionable materials. According to a review by Stanford University, Americans produce 25% more waste during this time, equating to about 7 million pounds of trash. In addition, the energy bill for an average family home increases almost $60 per month due to festive displays. Here are four simple tips for a greener holiday season.

1. Energy Saving

Reduce energy usage by using fewer decorative lights and animatronic ornaments as well as swapping incandescent bulbs for LEDs. Switching to LED bulbs and string lights uses an average of 75% less energy, while lasting about 25 times longer than incandescent lights. In addition to using more energy efficient bulbs, turn lights off during the day, when you’re not home and when you go to bed.

2. Eco-Friendly Gifts

It’s tempting to buy the trendiest toys and stock up on cute discount store finds, but these can often contain a mix of potentially toxic chemicals such as phthalates, flame retardants, bisphenol A and even lead. Instead, create your own gifts by baking, drawing, building or sewing or purchase gifts made with sustainable materials and natural ingredients. Also, consider presenting your loved ones with a relaxing spa day experience at home. Giving more meaningful gifts free from dangerous additives but packed full of your affections is not only better for the environment but will be remembered by the recipient long after the holiday has ended.

5 Products You Can’t Live Without

Busy parents, students on the-go and jet-setting retirees all love an indulgent, pampering spa treatment, but we were on a mission to find out the day-to-day items people just can’t live without. We asked our community of consultants, made up of women and men from all over the country, what Lemongrass Spa products are their favorites. While many said “everything” or “it’s too hard to pick”, there was a common thread among respondents: everyday, multiuse products top their list. Here are the five can’t-live-without Lemongrass Spa products you should try.

  1. Healing Elements Balm

It’s no surprise Healing Elements Balm (or “miracle in a jar”) is the number one can’t-live-without product! With various uses, such as diaper rash crème, relief for bug bites and skin rashes, and on the spot blemish treatment, Healing Elements has been the number one selling product for five years straight.

“There are too many reasons to list why Healing Elements is my top product” - Laura B. from New York

“It’s the saving grace with my kiddos for every little thing.” - Ashley S. from New York

“It treats everything having to do with skin.” - Elizabeth S. from Georgia

Smart Fixes for Life’s Little Disasters

If you’re like me, cleaning isn’t one of my favorite chores so I look for shortcuts and toxin free solutions. Knowing a few easy tricks makes tidying up before guests arrive or daily upkeep a whole lot simpler. Here are some household cleaning tips to save you time and money!

Tackle a stinky garbage disposal with this easy fix. You can drop in a slice of lemon, then with water running, turn on the disposal for 5 seconds to grind up the fruit. If you’re out of lemon try using two drops of lemon essential oil or a few squirts of Purifying Tea Tree Aromatherapy Mist which work just as well!

Clean the blender without putting it in the dishwasher. If you’re making smoothies on a regular basis, you’ll notice how dirty your blender can get if you don’t do a thorough job of washing each time. After each use, fill the blender with warm water and two pumps of Foaming Liquid Soap. Put the lid on and turn it to the blend setting for a few seconds. Rinse it out with warm water, air dry and you’re all set!

Mop up messes and refresh at the same time. Add 3 drops of Geranium or Pure Air Essential Oil to a small bucket of warm water to do a quick refresh in the kitchen or patio. Both of those oils will completely eliminate pet smells, food spills and odors.

Wipe down leather furniture without expensive cleaners. Why buy pricy leather furniture cleaning spray, which contains

6 Hot Tips for Transitioning to Summer Skincare

Summer’s hotter temperatures means your skin is exposed to sun, sea and chlorine, which can zap moisture, cause irritation or induce breakouts. Making small changes to your skincare routine can help maintain a flawless complexion all season long.

Tip #1 Lighter Moisturizer

You wouldn’t wear your wool socks to the pool, so don’t carry your rich moisturizer into summer. Keep skin hydrated without losing the anti-aging benefits of your face crème with the Overnight Rehab Crème or Green Tea Antioxidant Serum. Mineral Makeup Primer is another excellent choice that can be used by itself or under your makeup.
