5 Skincare Myths Answered
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. Now that we are all settling back into our routines, most of us are setting out to achieve our New Year’s resolutions. Whether it is to be more fit, find more time for yourself or eat healthier one of the easiest resolutions you can achieve is better skin!
Since there are many skincare myths, sometimes it can discourage people from starting a great skincare routine. Below I am going to answer some of the most common myths to help put your mind at ease.
Myth #1 You should only use oil-free products on oily skin.
It is now known that using oil on oily skin can help bring balance to the skin. People who have oily skin tend to strip it of all its natural oils and in return the skin overcompensates and produces more oil. This can be a tough cycle to break. If you are dealing with oily skin it is acceptable to use an oil-free product during the day and use oil at night. During the day you can obtain the benefits of matte skin by using an oil-free moisturizer and at night you can focus on rebalancing your skin with oil. Grape seed and jojoba oil are great for oily skin and those emollients are in our Tea Tree Face Crème.
Myth #2 Skin should be “squeaky-clean” or “tight” after washing.
If your skin is tight or dry after washing, then you have over cleansed your skin. The purpose of cleansing is to remove dirt, makeup and excess oil, but not to strip the skin (remove all of the oil). If you are using the correct cleanser your skin should feel normal after washing. This means it should not feel too tight or too oily.
Myth #3 Anti-aging products should produce immediate results.
The damage that has been done to your skin didn’t happen overnight and it can’t be corrected overnight. Most anti-aging products need to be used 4-6 weeks before you begin to see results and then it takes even longer to see the full benefits. The younger you start using these products the better chance you have at preventing future damage. The result time of these products depends on your cell turnover rate and how bad the damage is. The older you get the longer it takes for your cells to renew and this means it will take longer to see results. Aging is a part of life and it ultimately cannot be fully reversed (unless you have surgery). So embrace the little signs of aging and have realistic expectations when using anti-aging products.
Myth#4 Men do not need to worry about their skin.
The first thing I learned in esthetics school is skin is skin. Meaning no matter what gender, age or ethnicity, skin is treated the same. Proper skin care is essential to everyone. Men in general will not normally use a 6 step skin care system like a women, or experience all of the same issues, but will highly benefit from a 3-step skin care routine. For men I recommend a good cleanser, exfoliant and moisturizer.
Myth #5 You must use a separate “day” crème and “night” crème.
As long as you are using a well-rounded face crème they do not need to be different. Most crèmes now are made to treat a variety of conditions and are okay to use both morning and night. To switch things up you can use different serums underneath your moisturizers from day to night. The only thing that I recommend to add after you apply your moisturizer in the morning is a sunscreen. Try our Face Crème with Botanicals or Tea Tree Face Crème.
Here is to your best skincare year!
